GiggleIT Project

The GiggleIT Project -- Getting Started

Go to Giggle Town to choose a Gigglecritter to laugh at your story, joke or poem | Choosing a partner | GiggleIT and GreenIT | Doing some research about you | What do we find funny?

Gigglecritters

Choosing a partner
This is a collaborative project where everyone needs to learn how to work closely with someone else. Getting along with others is very important if we are going to make our world a better place in the future.

So during the GiggleIT Project, you will have lots of opportunities to work with different partners. To begin, your teacher will give you your own Gigglecritter to colour in/decorate [Gigglecritter PDF] and name.

These are folded into quarters and placed into a large bin/container. Your teacher will then draw out the critters two at a time. This will be your first partnership of many during this project.

When the partnerships are all completed, the critters will go back into the bin to be used next time.

GiggleIT and GreenIT
GiggleIT is an International project that supports a green approach to teaching and learning in schools.

Help protect and foster an environmentally friendly future for everyone by suggesting simple tips that your classroom could follow. Work with your partner to come up with some suggestions.

Each pair then adds their suggestions to a class list. Pairs then decide which 5 rules your class will try to follow for the rest of the year. Results are then collated and the five most popular suggestions will be accepted as a guide. Your teacher will place these on a class chart so everyone can see it.

Doing some research about you
Before you begin the project you will need to provide the GiggleIT team with some information about your country, city/town, your school and especially about your class.

What information do you think you will you need? You are limited to 300 words for each section, so dot points might be a good idea.

Discuss it with your partner and use the mindmap questions [Mindmap PDF | Mindmap Word document] to get started. You can do this activity two ways:

  1. If you don’t have access to a computer and the Internet, use the coloured paper option.
  2. If you do have access to a computer and the internet, you can use Freemind to create your mindmap. You will still need to collate your information with the rest of the class. This can be done electronically using either a digital projector or a SmartBoard so everyone can see the results.

On some coloured pieces of paper (or sticky notes) note down the things you think should go on your GiggleIT web page – one thing per page. Underline those things you think will need some more research.

When you have finished each section, pin or stick your papers on the board for everyone to see. With your teacher, put the suggestions into groups. As a class, work out which suggestions/information you will place on your GiggleIT web page.

There are 4 different sections for the web page:

 Country

 City/town

 School

 About Us (class)

Your teacher will assign pairs to work together as teams to find the information for each section. Things to remember:

Your information must be accurate/true, so check your facts in several different places (book, encyclopaedia and web site).

If you have photographs they must belong to you [Copyright PDF version] or your school and they must not contain images of people that can be easily identified [Internet safety PDF].

Your work must be well written and in English. Good sentences, capital letters and correct spelling will all say something about you, your class and your school.

Your information must be 300 words or less.

Each team will choose the best information and write it up as it will appear on the GiggleIT web site. Teams will then use the Assessment Recording Sheet [PDF version | Word document version] to evaluate the efforts provided by the other teams.

Once the assessments have been completed assessments are then returned to the teams. Team members can then use the assessments and any suggestions to refine their final product. Once everyone is happy with the final result, the information can be sent off to the GiggleIT team to go up on your school web page.
