  • Guidelines for School Libraries: Great Britain
    Sheila Ray
The School Library Association (SLA) of Great Britain is producing a series of pamphlets on school library organisation and use from which individual schools can create library handbooks that meet their particular needs. This approach offers flexibility for both publishers and users. Costs are kept low, the material can be updated easily, and current issues can be addressed quickly. This account of the process was written by a member of the SLA Publications Committee, which was responsible for developing the series.
  • Is Father Christmas Feeding the Goats? Or, The Bottomless Pit: Book Donations to a Developing Country
    Andree-Jeanne Tötemeyer
Book donations to developing countries may be a nuisance rather than a help. Prior consultation with the appropriate national and local agencies is essential. If gifts do not take into account existing needs and conditions, their only use may be to feed the goats.
  • Challenges to Library Materials From Principals in United States Secondary Schools -- A "Victory" of Sorts
    Dianne McAfee Hopkins
Challenges to school library materials initiated by principals in public middle, junior, and senior high school libraries in the United States are examined. The article provides a discussion of research and professional practice literature emphasising the leadership of the principal; the role of the principal in school library programme development; and the principal and school library censorship. The study revealed that challenges initiated by principals are likely to result in removal or restriction, and differ in several ways from challenges initiated by others. Challenges resulting in restriction may be viewed as a "victory" of sorts for both the principal and the librarian.
  • Resources for School Library Development
    Gerald R. Brown
Resources for School Library Development is a listing of materials designed to support the development of school libraries and school library programmes. Most are non-commercial publications, produced by ministries of education and school library associations. Many of the materials are ephemeral in nature and known only to people in a limited geographical area or a single organisation. The bibliography includes low-cost materials in many different formats. Availability information is provided.
