Meles Meles

In the digital age, it is expected that everybody will be able to access, retrieve or download material from the Internet. But as many members and stakeholders from IASL will recognize, this is not the case. Many people do not have computers and/or access to electronic information.

As IASL is a global community that will allow all people to share and find information on International School Librarianship, it is with great pleasure that we can announce that IASL has found a sponsor that will ensure the production and mailing of hard copies of the Newsletter to members of Zone C, honorary and retiree members.

This sponsor is Meles Meles School Library Service (Meles Meles SMD) from the Netherlands.

Meles Meles School Library Service is a private organisation and was founded in 1996 by Lourense H. Das. Meles Meles SMD works for primary, secondary and higher (vocational) education, and for library and educational organisations. The main activities are:

  • Consultancy for schools, educational institutions, library managers, school administrators and school librarians in the Netherlands and abroad
  • Training programmes for school librarians and clerks
  • Presentations in the Netherlands and in international settings and articles in professional magazines
  • Policy development for library organizations

The name Meles Meles has been derived from ‘Meles meles’, the Latin name for badger (see logo). A mammal that lives in large parts of Great Britain and on the continent in Europe. In the Netherlands the badger threatened to die out some years ago. The situation of the badger in the Netherlands is improving, due to the effort of organisations for preservation of badgers. The founder of Meles Meles School Library Service is Mrs. Lourense Das, the current Director Europe for IASL and Coordinator of the ENSIL Foundation. . The word 'das' is the Dutch word for badger.
