Citation
John Royce, who works at Robert College in Istanbul, was a long-serving member of the ECIS Librarians Committee and has served three terms of six years each on the committee. He also served as Regional Director of the North Africa-Middle East region for IASL for six years.
John has been awarded the IASL School Librarianship Award for his promotion of school librarianship and professional development in international schools worldwide.
In announcing the award, IASL President Diljit Singh noted that John ensured international school librarians worldwide had 24/7 access to support and professional networking through the electronic media. This has been highly appreciated by the library professionals, especially those in the smaller schools.
Mary Langford stated that John has been “a dedicated and hard-working chair who has selflessly given his time and passion to helping ECIS create exciting professional development opportunities for our member schools worldwide, in part through the sessions his committee has recommended for our annual conferences. He has also been an outstanding ambassador with our ECIS supporting members who are the providers of library services and resources to our schools.”
Luisa Marquardt, IASL Director Europe expressed her appreciation – “I appreciate his competence, professionalism and enthusiasm. He is always very supportive and generous, shares his knowledge with the others, encourages colleagues and provides them with advice and tips, regularly intervenes in the on-line learning environment (“Skoodle”) and fosters all participants.”
Coralie Clark, Ingrid Skirrow, Ruth Briddock and Kathy Lemaire also commended John’s ability to know when an area of professional development will be needed by his colleagues, coupled with his ability to arrange and deliver appropriate training to address that need, has been invaluable to many school librarians, both new and experienced within the profession
The International Association of School Librarianship congratulates John Royce on his achievements and success.
The International Association of School Librarianship, which promotes and administers this award, is committed to enabling young people to develop literary and cultural appreciation and to use information effectively through the improvement of school libraries and school library programs as a vital component of education.
