Romania

From Muresan Alina, Primary Teacher, Balcescu-Petofi School, Satu Mare, Romania

This is the first year when our school has celebrated this occasion.

Our primary students, together with their teachers, made a lot of bookmarks which were exchanged with 5 schools from Alabama, Canada, Texas, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, the little ones ( 1st grade) made The First Steps in the World of Books at school library, the other students create poems and short stories about book and the 6th grade students wrote compositions about A Day at My School. We also arranged small bookcases in our classrooms, where our students can read when they have time or during the breaks.

Through all these activities we had in view the popularization of  reading, increasing the interest for exploration and research, exercising social skills, developing imagination, creativity and improving skills of writing in a foreing language-English.

See our activities.

Romania

From Maria Cretu, Teacher-librarian, Vasile Alexandri National College, Bacau, Romania

For the third year in a row, the project organized by The International Association of School Librarianship, “What people are doing for IASL 2011” has cumulated a variety of activities in our school. Under the motto: “School Libraries Empower Learners for Life! (Bibliotecile Scolare va pregatesc pentru viata!), these activities brought into attention and emphasized the significant role of books, reading and libraries on the whole. There were a couple of distinguishable moments during these activities which took place in this period of time:

  1. On October 10, 2011, the students of class XII A (philology profile with a focus on English) were awarded for participating in the project entitled “Young Thoughts, Old Knowledge”. This is the same title of an original book which recounts in collages the personal thoughts of students or of renowned names on the importance of reading and libraries. The most thought-provoking pages were rewarded with…books! The students in charge of the project, were also responsible for a PPT presentation of these works.
  2. The Reading and Creative Writing Club, “LecturAsii”, started its fourth year of activity on October 19. New members were received, proposals for the bibliography were made and the schedule for the following meetings was established.
  3.  The second edition of “The Book Celebration” took place on October 20. The activities within this program were, in fact, various “reading exercises”:
    • Name That Character! – consisted in a parade of famous characters from the wondrous land of fairy tales, enacted by the secondary-school pupils. They acted out significant moments or key lines from the text and the audience had to guess the literary work and the author.
    • Karaoke – Let’s Sing And Learn Lyrics! – two students performed together with the audience a couple of songs based on the works of Nichita Stanescu and Adrian Paunescu.
    • Verses on Books – consisted in a group of students performing recital of poems dedicated to books.
    • Famous Libraries – the festivities ended with a brief PPT presentation of famous libraries.
  4. October 25 there was the opening of an exhibition of drawings and bookmark designs dedicated to The International Month of School Libraries. The best works were exhibited in the library’s hallway.

Over 350 students were involved in this project, coordinated by the librarian and teacher Maria Cretu, inspector and teacher Irina Negrea, doctorate and teacher Teona Codreanu, doctorate and teacher Lacramioara Nemes, teacher Ramona Mocanu, teacher Afrodita Timofti and teacher Ramona Palade-Jitaru.
