Outline of the ISLM activity : Shaping the Book – an exhibition

This is the third time we celebrate October as International School Library Month.
This year we tried to make our learners believe that they can…

... make a meaningful quipu thread encoded by knots
…write in ink with a quill pen (made from a feather of a goose)
…write cuneiform  characters with a stylus (on clay tablets)
…engrave words on the waxed surface of a tablet
…give useless books a second life
…touch and read
…paint initials in traditional medieval way
…grow an interesting plant
…use pictures to make up stories
…design their own book covers

…have a good time!

Since 2006 our school library, on its own initiative, has been involved in celebrating the International School Library Month (ISLM). Spread throughout the month of October, it is aimed at making students, teachers, and the local community interested in initiatives taken by our library, to make students more aware of the value of the library’s resources in the process of acquiring knowledge and skills as well as to encourage them to use different sources of information.

Every year, as part of ISLM, the library prepares various attractions for the students, including competitions, quizzes, a school event called “kids reading to kids”, author meetings, performances, poetry readings, book exhibitions etc.

It is worth emphasizing that, year by year, more and more members of the school community, including students, teachers and parents are involved in the celebrations. An impressive collection of works created by the participants of the annual MMBS celebrations is evidence of this. Members of School Library Circle help us organize the events connected with the ISLM celebrations. This will be the sixth time that our school library has taken part in the ISLM celebrations. Along with this year’s celebrations, held worldwide under the slogan “School libraries empower learners for life”, we have prepared the following events:

  • A book worth recommending - a competition for the most interesting book review (junior high school, grades 1-3)
  • Authors of my region - a competition for the best multimedia presentation (elementary school, 6th grade students)
  • Kids reading to kids - a school program aimed at reading to children, including reading English books (grades “0” and 1-3 of elementary school)
  • What do you know about ISLM?- a quiz for both elementary and junior high school grades (in class)
  • Our readers’ creativity- an exhibition showcasing our students’ work (poems, albums, drawings, bookmark design, posters)
  • The history of ISLD/ISLM  in our school- photo gallery
  • Admitting new members into the ranks of the School Library Circle.
