From Meenu Jain, Librarian, G.D. Goenka Public School, New Delhi, India

In a bid to encourage reading and to inculcate a love for books, the school library planned a Fantasy Book Week that would involve the entire school. Under the guidance and support of our principal and vice principal the initiative got a huge response from enthusiastic readers. The focus of the event was to take the children on a journey into the beautiful world of fairies, goblins, witches, kings and queens and help them escape from the world which seems  dreary at times. Such an escape uplifts their spirits and kindles their imagination. A plethora of activities such as ‘tooth fairy box’, ‘my guardian angel’, ‘fantasy castle’, ‘UFO’, ‘slam book’ etc were held in the library. Students of all classes participated enthusiastically in the versatile array of events. The winners of the various activities were awarded certificates and gift vouchers.

Justice Leila Seth, the former chief justice and renowned writer visited the school during the week. She held an engrossing and interactive session with junior students where she imparted knowledge and learning from the Preamble to our Constitution. The session was thoroughly enjoyed by the students. Besides this we took part in the Bookmark Exchange program organized by International Association of School libraries (IASL). The bookmarks made by our school students were exchanged with the John Gould Fletcher Library in Arkansas, USA.

Book Fair on October 14th 2011

Books are a mirror of ones soul which enrich the mind and soothe the heart.

G.D.Goenka World School organized a One Day 'Book Fair' on 14th October, 2011.

The signal went loud and clear that G.D.Goenka School believes in providing its students with holistic and informative literature to enrich their vocabulary and diction.

The fair was inaugurated by the school principal, Mrs.Neeta Bali, who wished that the students inculcate reading habits by reading enriched literature.

The children enjoyed the fair and picked books varying from science to spooky stories; from puzzles to poems; and from fiction to facts. The teachers equally helped the children in selecting the books.

The children wished the fair to last for a longer time as it would give them an opportunity to read and access more informative literature besides their efficiently loaded school library.

India

From Rashmi Kumbar, Teacher Librarian, Adani Vidya Mandir, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.

Adani Vidya Mandir, Ahmedabad, India wishes everybody a Wonderful ISLM time! It was exciting to host a series of events on the occasion of International School Library Month. As is our practice everybody in our school right from teachers to students celebrated reading and books and our library! Our ISLM activities were spread between 3rd October - 21st October 2011, after which we closed for our Diwali break. To give a gist of our fervor - students of grade III put their observations of ‘My School Library’ in the form of drawing and colouring. Grade IV students gave wings to their thoughts and wrote essays on ‘My Dream Library’. Grade V students had a fabulous time as they created unique Wordles on ‘My Favourite Books in the Library’. Grade VI students got involved in Poster Making on ‘Libraries of the Future‘while grade VII students compiled information on ‘How do I use my School Library’. Grade VIII students went ahead and read and gathered information on ‘Indian Authors we Love to Read’ and put up their works, reviews and list of stories written by them. Grade IX students went on to create a timeline of libraries titled ‘Story of the Library – Journey up till now’ and grade X students had fun creating Totem Poles on the ‘Famous Libraries’ and their description.

The teachers took part in a study wherein they gave information on their favourite book, favourite author and how they used their school library during their student days titled ‘My School Reading Memories’. All these activities were library research oriented and it was rewarding to see the students hovering in the library to collect information, complete their posters, put up their works, etc. On 17th October 2011 (Monday) we had a special assembly where in a brief about ISLM and its importance was shared, along with book reviews to educate the students. Grade X students put up a play based on ‘The Enormous Crocodile’ by Roald Dahl while a poem on books was presented by students of III, IV & V to entertain the students. As a part of the celebration we had registered our school for the International Book Mark Exchange Project. Our school prepared book marks for the students of Cindrich Elementary, Surrey, British Columbia, Canada with various themes like My favourite story character, Indian Art work, Flag, Map, National symbols of India,  My Role Model, Culture of Ahmedabad, etc.

Our being a totally free school under the Adani Foundation CSR initiative especially for students of the economically challenged strata, it is heartwarming to see the students taking keen interest in participating in events like this, and we at Adani Vidya Mandir thank IASL for creating such a wonderful opportunity for all of us! Looking forward to be a part of all such activities! A Big Thanks IASL!
