From Sadaf Shahid, Librarian, Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karachi
Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karachi (AKHSS, K) is a unit of Aga Khan Education Service, Pakistan (AKESP) which is the entity of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
The well spring of our ethos and our global perspective is our association with Aga Khan Education Service, Pakistan.AKES, P, envisions to be a “Dynamic learning organization achieving excellence” with the core purpose of “Reaching out to inspire better lives.”
AKHSS, K has a tradition to celebrate international events in order to promote awareness and involvement of students in various dimensions of learning and development.
In connection to this, International School Library Day (ISLD) has been planned to celebrate on 25th October 2010 by the library society.
What is Library Society?
Library Society is a group of students at AKHSS, K working together with an objective to attract students towards library. Library Society promotes the importance of Library and helps Library Staff in conducting such programs that accomplish this objective.
Several activities were conducted during our celebration of ISLD.
Inaugural Ceremony:
The Principal of Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karachi lit the candle as a symbol of wisdom, warmth and glow of life long learning. Cards were given to all the participants to write a message for the school community which was later displayed on the notice board.
Reading Wizard
This activity was conducted in the library with the registered students. Students were registered in pairs. The registration was based on first come first serve basis and 15 pairs of students from each shift participated in the activity.
Unknown reading passage was given to the students along with chart papers. Within 1 hour and a half, each pair read the text, wrote a review of maximum 500 words and prepared a poster on the theme presented in the passage. This activity motivated students to imagine and depict their ideas in the form of a poster. Also it increased teamwork in the participants.
The best pair of all the fifteen was declared winner on the basis of their pictorial presentation and the review. Each shift had its own winning pair who was awarded with a certificate of achievement.
Spelling Bee:
Spelling bee is an activity that encourages students to learn and correct more and more of their spelling mistakes. At AKHSS, K there is a tradition to organize activities for the growth of students’ learning. Therefore, Library Society conducted the “Spelling Bee Contest” as an activity in the ISLD.
The competition was conducted in three rounds. In the first round, the students spelled two words pronounced by the announcer. After the first round 4 pairs of students were eliminated and the rest competed in second round. In second round, a hint was provided to the students. They had to guess the word and then spell it, if the word was spelt correctly the pair was awarded 3 points and if it was spelt wrong, they were given a negative 1. Similarly, every pair was asked 4 words; the pairs with highest scores of at least 3 correct spelling eventually moved to the next round. In the third round, two teams gave 5 words to each other for spelling. Highest scorer of that round was announced the winning pair.

ISLM activity: During the International School Library Month our school library wants to celebrate by promoting the following activities:

Special Needs students participate in the ISLM Bookmark project 2010. The bookmarks, which are made in acrylic are pieces of a puzzle where the library is presented as a rainbow and at the end of the rainbow there's the pot of gold, which is the reward for using the school library. Several kinds of users are represented in the bookmarks, not only because they are from different races but also because some of them have some kind of disability.
