From Amtul Sajjad, Regional Librarian South, Beaconhouse School System, Karachi
The International School Library Month was celebrated on 5th. October 2009 to 29th. October 2009 in different branches of Beaconhouse School System. In my belief the vital role of school librarian is to directly interact with students and encourage them to learn and explore books and develop reading habit and help them to get high achievements in their lives. School Libraries help teachers to teach and children to learn.

During this period students involved in different activities - Made Book marks, Wrote fairy tales, made posters of different characters and painted their favorite stories, wrote biographies of Authors and Book Fair, visited other libraries, students of O Level’s classes visited Bookshops/Publishers to select books for their libraries. Read out information on different topics in morning assembly etc.

From Celeste Oliveira, Teacher Librarian,School Library of Escola Secundária D. Dinis-Lisboa
To celebrate this day, the school library worked out three themes according to the students’ age levels and type of activities.

We would like to emphasize the decoration of the library entry with strips on the floor saying "All roads lead to the Library" and an oriental scenery to seduce the audience.

During the morning thirty children from the local kindergarten were received and participated in the activities imagined and developed by students and teachers of the Assistants to Infancy Professional Course. The kids were received and watched a puppet theatre which broke the ice and allowed them to adapt themselves to the room. Afterwards, some students worked out a short story ”Os Estranhóides”, which increases their creative imagination once the kids were invited to build and draw the characters of the story. Last, the 9th grade group developed another activity with the children, by building a collective puzzle. At lunchtime, in the school canteen, students performed a play inspired in the short story “The Pregnant Pot”. This activity was developed by the body expression group and a teacher. In the afternoon we had a reading marathon with several age levels students.
To the evening classes we opted for a more suggestive topic: “One Thousand and One Nights”… in which both students and teachers read diverse texts, being some of them, of their own authorship.

The success of this initiative was evident and confirmed by the requests for its further extension.
