From Eva von Jordan-Bonin, Head of School Library Department, Frankfurt Public Library.
The School Library Division of the Public Library in Frankfurt/Germany, which manages 68 school libraries in the city, is participating again in the International School Library Month. Actually we will have a school library week from October 27th to October 31st this year.
"School Library - This Is Where It Happens!" is the theme of the School Library Week in Frankfurt am Main / Germany. The week will be under the patronage of the city's Mayor Jutta Ebeling, who will inaugurate the week October 27th.
For almost 35 years, the School Library Department supports schools in organizing school libraries, and provides various offers to promote reading and to advance media skills. The Department works closely with teachers and many volunteers. School libraries in Frankfurt are well-established and have become indispensable to the schools. Reason enough to celebrate!
Our "School Library Week 2008"
- features the various functions of a state-of-the-art school library in daily school life
- introduces the public to the commitment of many dedicated individuals in school libraries
- offers suggestions and encourages exchange
82 events in over 40 schools will provide an insight to the variety of the work of school libraries in Frankfurt schools. Interested individuals are invited to come and find out more and to join the events.

We marked the International School Library Month by organising a good book fair with the help of Scholastic Book publishers for three days starting from 6th to 8th of this month.
From Anna Kagedal, Kodaikanal International School
As I am new in the school library world and learning my job at an international school, we have kept celebrations of ISLM moderate, but still it has been very appreciated among the students and staff.
We have simply asked the students to submit their top 5 wishes for novels that they would like to read in the library, or simply their top 5 novels. From that we are going to make a Kodaikanal International School Top 10 list. All books on that list will be purchased by the library if they are not already available. Since our school is in a very isolated place, students don't have ready access to literature outside the school library at all. And there has not been an imitative like this in years. So even if it is a small thing, it is appreciated. And we would probably not have done it at this time if it wasn't for ISLM. Middle School students have also created badges and bookmarks, and elementary school is doing a read-a-thon to raise money for a local village school.

The week began with a special symbolic ceremony of lighting the traditional lamp by the Academic Director, Mr. Satinder Kumar, The Principal, Mrs. Neeta Bali, The vice Principal, Mr. Vijaymohan Pokhriyal and myself.

The International School Library Week marked the beginning of Reading Movement in the School. The leaders of the school encouraged the student audience to understand the magnanimous value of Reading in our life. The quote, “Reading maketh a man…” surely stimulated the young brains to gear up to take the challenge.
The principal sent waves of enthusiasm and curiosity by introducing “One Book challenge”, a strategic Reading Program for the whole school.
As awareness raising about resources availability in the library, a brochure, “Leisure Books for New Readers” along with a badge, “To Succeed you must Read” for the whole school community. There were surprise ‘RR’ (Regular Readers) awards for eight students.
For four days students put up well structured assemblies on Malaysian, Indian, Korean and Canadian literature showcasing authors of young adult literature. Vancouver Public Library pictures and programs were much appreciated. Special thanks to Mr. Gerald Brown who took me on a tour while I was with him in Canada in August.
Altogether 21 events, contests, shows, workshops, assemblies engulfed the whole school for four days followed by a Book Fair on the 18th.
I will mention and put up pictures of the activities which were loved by one and all.

A very happy ISLM to you all! The celebration has been spread across throughout the month of October.
Let me begin by expressing my gratitude towards our principal, Mr. M L Pauly, who has supported us through and through and has provided us space & encouragement to carry out the activities with great enthusiasm and spirit.
Students from class I to VII as well as school teachers & parents were involved in various ISLM celebrations. They were a part of a project called “Soft board Competition: which was conducted for class I to V.
Different themes were given to each class :
Class I Fairy Tales
Class II Fable Stories
Class III Moral Stories
Class IV Folk tales from India
Class V Folk tales from out side India
The judging was done by some of our most creative teachers.
We also had yet another class activity for class I, II & III wherein they were asked to draw their favorite characters & also make a new cover page for any lady bird book read by them...
For classes VI & VII we had book presentations conducted during their library periods by my colleague. Ms Rashmi Kumbar and myself.
Last but not the least, we also had a Special Assembly for classes I – V which was the climate of the celebrations. The whole show was for about an hour where each class got an opportunity to present something. The items were as follows:
Class I Recitation
Class II Parts of the book
Class III Short skit in Hindi
Class IV Enormous Crocodile(An Act) & Roald Dahl
Class V A Akbar & Birbal (A famous Indian folk tale was enacted)
Class V B Worth of salt (A skit)
It was truly a fun filled learning experience...
From Mrs Rashmi Kumbar, Librarian, Librarian, Zydus School for Excellence, Ahmedabad
Our ISLM celebrations began in the first week of October with different activities for different classes. Our principal, M L Pauly announced soft board decoration competition based on the theme of stories/books and reading for classes I to V. Class I decorated their class soft boards on the theme of fairytales while class II chose animal stories. Class III decoration was based on moral stories. Class IV went for folktales of India while class V explored folktales from outside India. It was a treat to the eyes and appeared as if all the stories had come alive in the form of puppets, cutouts, posters etc. This actually fostered teamwork among students and saw quite a few enthusiastic parents who partnered in this process and the role of the class teacher was appreciable. The library was probably the most jammed place and the traffic had to be manned as children jetted in and out, looking for various storybooks and art books to out beat their friends in decorating their respective classes. We adopted the ISLM theme posted to suite our celebrations by involving class III students.
The judges had a hard time selecting the winners. So, they went in for various awards like 'Most Informative', 'Visually Appealing' and such other categories. Thus, most classes won in one category or the other. During the ISLM month, class I and II students celebrated their favourite books by identifying the main character and designed hanging mobiles of them! Class III students designed book covers of their favourite books. Class IV chose to present Panchantantra stories in the form of posters. Class V students enacted a few stories that they had read while class VI students had a book presentation competition. Students of class VII prepared informative and humorous bio-data of their favourite characters. Class VIII formed table teams and discussions on various topics like - Should we have photocopying facilities in the libraries, having coffee lounges in the library, why should one read classics, why should one read biographies and on whether we should increase our graphic novel collection. The outcome of the discussions was quite interesting.
We concluded our celebrations of ISLM on 22nd Oct '08 with a special assembly for and by the students of class I to V, since the students of classes VI to XI were taking their mid term exams. There were around 7 items put up by the students. Miss Pranali Bhatt of class IV spoke about ISLM and its importance while Pranav Thakkar of class V anchored the show. 12 students of class I recited a poem on books and Class II students shared information as to what information different parts of the books give us. Class III students enacted a small play in hindi. Class IV students enacted the story The Enormous Crocodile. Class V students put up two plays based on King Akbar and Birbal the Clever. The highlight of the special assembly was the surprise parade of story book characters like Gingerbread man, Winnie the Pooh, Little Mermaid, Peter Rabbit, Three Little Pigs, Rapunzel, Cinderella, Snowwhite and the Seven Dwarfs, etc. It delighted the children to see their favourite characters on stage marching to a special tune and blowing kisses at them. It was indeed a grand closing ceremony as we all took our Diwali festival break of 10 days and will join back to welcome winter and begin our second session of this academic year. Overall it was a very happening month at our library with special rewards to students and parents who crossed reading100 books and showed extraordinary interest in reading books and using library.
My heartfelt thanks to my principal Mr. M L Pauly for encouraging us and extending his support for the cause of the library and its mission, to all the enthusiastic teachers for being a part of the celebrations and my wonderful colleague, Mrs. Mona Shah who coordinated the special assembly and many other events. Looking forward for many more such ISLM Celebrations!

I recently participated in a Training-the-Trainers in Information Literacy, and have been encouraged to promote the skills in my school. An immediate action I made with the support of my school was adding a link to our school website about information seeking strategies that have been designed to meet our needs here. It is expected that library sessions will become more effective as our students can learn by themselves from the link steps of managing information, and add creativity to expand their understanding about their lives.
Happy International School Library Month, and best regards from Surabaya!
