From Eva von Jordan-Bonin, Head of School Library Department, Frankfurt Public Library
The School Library Division of the Public Library in Frankfurt/Germany, which manages 64 school libraries in the city, is again participating in the International School Library Day this year.
Our activity for all the students in Frankfurt is called "It is your turn!" With this activity we continue with our student surveys which have proven to be very successful in recent years. They are always exploring the interests of our readers and we want to give the students a voice. This year we are asking for recommendations of books, and for the first time, questions about the school library: What should it look like? Should there be a hammock? What are the kids longing for in their school library?
We will offer two versions of the survey, one for first to fourth graders and one for the older students.
Again, the results will be published and distributed throughout Frankfurt schools to support the teacher and librarians and to reflect the children's interests and preferences.

Hong Kong

From Andrea Walker, Head of Library & Information Resources, Renaissance College, Ma On Shan, NT.
We have just opened in a new school building with an enrollment of approximately 900 students from Year 1 to Year 13. ISLD will be a great opportunity for us to promote the new Resource Centre and our services. We will use the Press Release on the resources page of ISLD to help achieve this. We will also take part in the Bookmark Project with a school in Lisbon, Portugal. Our other goal is to have the new centre looking fabulous for this our first international event.

From Ho Wing Tze, Dawn, Teacher Librarian, Koowloon Technical School, Kowloon.
A large piece of art paper with the design of a huge bookmark will be held upright at the entrance of my school on that morning. Every student and staff coming to school are invited to paste a small piece of art paper punched in different shapes on the bookmark. They are also invited to borrow a book from the school library on that day as a support to ISLD. See our ISLD website.

From Dana Dukic, Librarian, Kowloon Junior School.
Kowloon Junior School is an international primary school in Hong Kong. The school operates on two campuses. The Perth Street campus accommodates students from Year 1 to Year 3. This year we will celebrate the ISLD by creating simple book reports in a form of podcast. All the podcasts will be published on the school library webpage and available for subscription.

From Fiona Collins, Teacher librarian, Kowloon Junior School.
We are a 5 form entry Primary School based in Hong Kong with 900 students based at two campuses. At the Rose Street Campus we have 450 students in Years 4, 5 & 6. All our classes have been voting on their favourite non-fiction books and explaining why they are good information books. We shall be emailing this information as part of the Email Around the World project. We shall also be holding some special events on the day and during the week to celebrate the international flavour of our school and library.

From Amanda Gough, Librarian, Kellett School, Polfulam.
Here at Kellett we are inviting parents to read stories from their own country (these are not always in English). We have 22 nationalities at Kellett and will be reading the children stories from many of the countries over the week. This is to reflect the cultural diversity of our school community.

We are also participating in the bookmark project. The children will also produce either a piece of writing or a drawing for display in the library about The World.

From Claire Palmer, Librarian, West Island School.
West Island School is an international secondary school (ages 11-18) with students of many nationalities attending. To celebrate ISLD students and teachers have been recommending books which best represent Hong Kong and our culture. We have posted the top five books on our school website. A collection of books from other countries and cultures from around the world are available to borrow from the library.

From Betty Chu, Teacher Librarian, Tsing Yi Trade Association Primary School.
This year we have a wonderful time though we did not have a big celebration in my school for ISLD. We did have a series of programs started in September.

We were so lucky that Margriet Ruurs, who initiated the Bookmarks exchange program, to be our honourable guest speaker on 18th September. Kids gathered in the hall and had a marvellous storytime with Margriet. Lovely illustrative story books from Margriet are the most valuable collection in our library. During her stay here we had memorable time at the Peak, too.

For the bookmark exchange program, not only bookmarks, we got pins, stickers from St Paul School in Kitchener, Canada. The kids were so pleased to get the bookmarks and read the lines written on them. They learned much from their writings and I hope this will encourage them to read more English books.

On 23rd October, I displayed some books in the hall and let them choose any one they like, wrote down their names on the sticker to be stuck on their book. I asked them to share with their parents at home. Out of my expectation, instead of running about, I found some of them reading silently in the playground! This further supports that "Children love reading if they get the book they love." When all the photos are ready online I will share with you all later.

Hungary

From Viktoria Horvath, School Librarian.
The school library section of the Hungarian Library Association in Budapest, the capital of Hungary will celebrate International School Library Day with a competition. Its main objectives are to invite students to the library to play, to experience the joy of being in a library and to learn how to use it as a source of information and knowledge. We found out a name to this program so as to rhyme in the following sentence: "Olvass, Tudd, Tedd!" that is "OTT" in short, meaning "THERE". "Olvass, Tudd, Tedd!"means "Reading, Knowing, Doing" in English. And where else could children do this best than "THERE" in the school library.

The main activity will be a competition consisting of three rounds. Besides the competition children will have entertainment.

  • In the first round students can fill in test sheets in the respective school libraries on 2 October.
  • Those who have reached good results will go into the second round, which happens on 7 October. On this occasion, besides filling in worksheets, children can enjoy themselves with games and take part in lots of interesting programmes.
  • Finally, all these interested and lovely students who had the courage to enter this adventure will be invited to the Budapest Meeting of ISLD when games and surprises will enterain them and we will celebrate together: the students, the school librarians, and members of the Theca Club of Budapest gathering students interested in libraries. As 23 October is the 50th Anniversary of an important event in the history of Hungary, our celebration will take place on 24 October.

We send our best regards to everyone.

From Ferenc Szalai, School Librarian.
The Bocskai Istvan Altalanos Iskola is a 77 year old school in Budapest in the Ujbuda (Newbuda) district. From October 2006 the library of the school has moved to a new place. This is a larger hall. The walls are clear, the books will not be on the shelves until 24th October. We celebrate one day later the ISLD because 23rd October is a national ceremonial day, the 50th anniversary of the Revolution. So, we open the new library for the pupils on the 24th October. There will be lots of games, quizzes all on the day.

Israel

From Tzipi Karelitz, Supervisor of School Libraries, Ministry of Education.
This year International School Library Day will be celebrated in Israel as a national event to coincide with the launching of Israel's "Book Parade". This project, now in its twelfth year, provides an effective framework for reading promotion nationwide, and takes place in all sectors of the population.
Pupils are encouraged to read books from reading lists appropriate for different age groups, compiled by the Department for school libraries in the Ministry of Education. After months of activities and projects on the recommended books, pupils vote for their favourite book on a National Election Day which will take place this year on May 2, 2007.

The International School Library Day will be celebrated in every school as the beginning of reading and reading activities of the "Book Parade". A special ceremony will be held in a high school in Carmiel, a Northern Israeli town. The ceremony will be attended by the General Manager of the Ministry of Education. Pupils from the school will play an active part in the ceremony, highlighting the emphasis to be placed this year on reading promotion in high schools and on the role of school libraries in encouraging reading among adolescents.

From Carlo Carzan, Associazone Cosi Per Gioco.

English translation - The Association "Cosi per gioco" (Like this, as a game), based in Palermo, is involved and actively committed to promoting reading among children, teachers and families. For ISLD 2006 it has launched the contest "Segna il segnalibro" (Mark the bookmark). During October 23, children were invited to make a bookmark after a reading-aloud session. Twenty books will be donated to the school class whom the boy(s)/ girl(s), author(s) of the best bookmark, belongs to. More than 90 schools and 10,000 children have joined in the project, in Sicily, and got a kit to make their bookmarks; the region-wide ISLD activities have been reading and art workshops about books, and, of course, reading and knowing.

From Khalida Qattash, Teacher librarian
To be honest I did not know of such a day until I got the link to this website from the Online Curriculum Center of the IBO official website. Therefore, we are yet to raise attention to this occasion as soon as we can manage to fit it within our school scheduling of events.
I simply love the idea of the Bookmarks Project.
