From Tatyana Yarovaya, Head Librarian, Salvutich Secondary School#1
Slavutich is the youngest town in Ukraine. It was built in 1987 after an accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant for people who worked at this plant and lived in Pripyat city which "died" because of this accident. There are about 25 thousand habitants in Slavutish. Almost 6 thousands are kids. There are 4 secondary schools in the town. I present the school #1. There are about 1300 students at my school. Our students like to read very much! I have worked at this school for over 14 years and I have had experience with different type of school library work. I am so happy to know about this nice tradition to celebrate ISLD in different countries! I am impressed about everything I've read on this web-site! This is the second time we celebrate ISLD in our town. My colleagues and I used all recommendations we could find on this IASL web-site.
Here is some information about our activities on this Day.
We plan to have a lot of activities on this day and the week before this day.
We asked our Student Library Assistants to search the aphorisms about libraries, books and reading. The best utterances of the famous persons must be hung out on the doors of all classrooms of the school;
School students from the 3rd to 11th grades will take a part in the competition for the best children books. From all submissions we created a jury that evaluated all books the students proposed. This student’s jury will select the best ten.
We had a researching of student opinions “What library the students would like to have in the school?"
We also were sending a press release to local newspapers with information about the International School Library Day and about our activities to celebrate this day in the school.
Librarians will present the exhibition dedicated to ISLD. Teachers will bring the students to the school library for the library lesson about ISLD. School librarians tell about ISLD and also about IASL.
High school students take a part in the competitions for the best booklet and bookmarker dedicated to ISLD.
Student Library Assistants prepare the main activities on October 22, 2007. All along the 22nd, the local radio will tell about ISLD. Then a program - show will be presented which includes awarding of winners who were graced by the school officials. There will be some nominations for students: the nomination “The most active student in the library”, the nomination “The most serious reader in the library” and the nomination “The most artistic reader in the library” They also will awarded the best students who take care of students books the best.
All school librarians of town schools will have a meeting at the library to discuss the town school libraries problems and to make a decision what they can do for the changing of this situation. On this day October,22 Slavutich school librarians will present a local school libraries association which was created this summer finally after hard work to make this dream true.
I send my congratulations to all school librarians in the world.
From Paula Copeman and Felicity Van der Schaar, School librarians, Claires Court Schools.
We chose this special day to open the new Junior Library at Claires Court Schools, the College in Maidenhead in Berkshire. It was a wonderful celebration of the new facilities and the role of school libraries in education. Staff and pupils were available to guide guests through the new facility, which has been fully revamped in an effort to provide a modern learning environment. New shelving and seating, supplied by library equipment specialists Demco, form a major part of the redevelopment, with an upholstered window seat for comfortable leisure reading incorporated into the child-friendly design. Children's author and Maidenhead resident, Forrester Mitchell, writer of Penny Tales performed the opening ceremony and read to the year 3 English class.
From Liz Dodds, Library media teacher, Bullard High School, Fresno, CA.
At Bullard High School, the school library will be taking part in ISLD celebrations by Blogging about Books. From any computer with web access students, parents, staff members, community members and Fresno Unified Board Members can log on to the Bullard Library Blog and describe a favourite book. All postings will be available to read on the Bullard Library Blog until the end of November. Also in honour of ISLD we are collecting monetary donations through the month of November for the school library in Aku, Nigeria. This library was started in 2006 by a former Bullard parent. In addition to needing money to buy books they also need money for scholarships. Here is a message from one of the American volunteers working with the library -Originally we had been charging a little over a dollar for an individual student in a class to take computer classes, etc. for two, 2 hour sessions a week for three months. This covered the cost of the diesel for the generator, water to be trucked in to use for the tiolets, drinking water and supplies. The new government is saying that we cannot charge children so we're working on getting scholarships. Please send your donations to the Bullard High School Library, Aku Library Project, 5445 N. Palm Ave., Fresno, CA 93704, USA.
