ISLD has been celebrated in our school since 2003. On this occasion our school is decorated with colourful posters that invite everyone to visit our library. Moreover, posters consist of the programme of celebrities. We organize difference contests, exhibitions and shows. Younger groups from our school and children from the kindergarten are invited to classes. In this day, all the children who are borrowing books from the library may help themselves to sweets and the school staff is invited to drink coffeee and eat some cake. All active readers may always count on some small gifts. This year ISLD is very special for us because our school is celebrating its 50th anniversary. For this reason, one of th main elements of our library's decor is the exhibition of photographs connected with all the history of our library. ISLD in our school is prepared by pupils - representatives from 3rd and 4th year (2 people from each class). These children are sympathizers and active readers of our library. They always support the library and its activity. We are happy that we can celebrate ISLD together with other libraries all over the world. Greetings for all.

From Adelina Macovei, Activities and Educationa Projects Coordinator, Aurel Vlaicu School, Braila.
We would like very much to celebrate ISLD and we would be very happy to develop some of these activities of which we have been informed. We will be doing some of the following:

  • Pupils between ages of 7-8 years old will be making book marks for the colleagues in other schools
  • Children between ages of 9-10 years old will be reading story books in the library
  • Pupils between ages 11-12 years old will be collecting books from other pupils from other schools
  • Pupils of all ages (7-14 years old) are already donating books this week to our school library
  • Pupils between ages of 13-14 years old will be exchanging quotes from different books with other pupils from other schools (the pupils will have read the specific books and will have chosen the quotes they liked the most)

We would like to take this opportunity to let you know that we are very honored that we can be part of this event that is celebrated all over the world. Please advise of other suitable activities that we can include on this occasion.

From Sofia and Adriana, classroom teachers, School No. 7 Restita, Resita. Language of instruction: Romanian, English, French - 3rd and 4th grade.
On 22nd October 2007 we are going to have a presentation of 4 Big Books about Folk Tales and Legends, handmade by students from our school, 2 Sou "Academic Emilian Stanev" - Sofia, Bulgaria and Szcola Podstawowa im. Gen. Jozefa Gizy, Wieloglowe, Poland. The books are written both in each country language and in English. Students are going to offer handmade bookmarks to the teachers, parents and other participants. From Camelia Mantarosie, librarian, The Documentation Centre (School Library) of Scholar Group "Nicolae Balcesu", Intorsura-Buzaului, Covasna County.
A couple of weeks ago I discovered the online IASL site which I had found very interesting. I consider that being a part of the International Association of School Librarianship would allow me to improve the activity of my centre and get a good image on the activities of the school libraries in the entire world. I also found out about ISLD and I have organised activities in our high school. I have included a brief report of our activities with a PowerPoint presentation and other short presentations of some Romanian writers (Eminescu and Eliade) made by our students to popularise the Romanian literature.

Other activities:

  • Creation of special bookmarks for ISLD by the project team. These bookmarks will be distributed to all the students in the school in order to advertise the event.
  • "Another step towards learning autonomy" - Activity meant to introduce the school library, respectively the documentation centre, to young students. To achieve this, pupils in the 3rd and 4th class for "Bobobcea School" were invited to the Documentation Centre - School Library of Scholar Group "N.Balcescu" (It must be stated the Bobocea School does not have a school library nor Internet access.) To documentation centre facilities were presented to the visiting students, they were taught how to find a book in the documentation centre, how to use a dictionary, how to find a book in a virtual library and how to use the Internet for enjoyment. Pictures from this activity are included in the PowerPoint presentation. Along the entire day they were guided by our high school students who found this a great opportunity to apply and share their knowledge. At the end of the activity the visiting students received copies of the poster especially created for ISLD and they could colour it in.
  • "If you want to read Romanian literature, I could recommend"...- Activity through which our students found five of the most famous Romanian writers and put up five short PowerPoint presentations on their work. Their purpose was to advertise Romanian literature in the world by mean of the IASL.
  • "The book I always wanted to read - a dream come true" - Activity for encouraging reading. On ISLD all the students will bring with them a book they always wanted to read, but never had time. At the same time they will be allowed to spend an hour reading the book. When the time elapses students from the project team will share the bookmarks created especially for ISLD and will ask the other students to place them in their books with the hope they would continue reading further on.
  • Meeting with the teachers' board and discuss the activities and their results and also plan further activities.
  • ....."And Party!"... celebrating International School Library Day.

From Adelina Macovei, Activities and Educational Projects Coordinator, Aurel Vlaicu School, Braila.
On October 22nd we celebrated the ISLD in our school library. We are very happy to have developed some of these activities of which we have been informed. We are doing the the following:

  • Pupils between the ages of 7 - 8 years old made 25 book marks for their colleagues and shared them.
  • Children between ages of 9 - 10 years old read poems and story books in the library.
  • Pupils between the ages of 11 and 12 years old collected books from other pupils and donated to the school library.
  • Pupils of all ages (7 - 14 years) are already donating books this week to our school library.
  • Pupils between ages of 13 - 14 years old exchanged quotes from different books with other pupils from other schools (the pupils will have read the specific books and will have chosen the quotes they liked the most).

Our pupils were very excited to join in this event that was celebrated all over the world.

The marathon will come to an end on October, 26th. This day we have invited colleagues from Moscow, the Chechen Republic and from the Gunib region of Dagestan.

Various book exhibitions will be prepared for this day. There will be a photo exhibition, Reading Children, and an exhibition of paintings. The most interesting projects and ideas will be noted and there will be a cheerful concert and celebratory entertainment.

Within three months I have written down on video more than 30 references to our school librarians of the well-known people from the different countries. It will be a great surprise for all.

I will send you a report about the library marathon and photos.

Serbia

From Mirjana Soskic, Librarian/IT, Nevenka Vejkovic, Teacher Librarian and Jasmina Popovic, Media Specialist, Experimental Elementary School, Vladislav Ribnikar, Belgrade.
As it is every other working day, on ISLD our multimedia centre was jam-packed with pupils during all breaks and also during classes. Up stairs in the reading room fourth grade pupils were watching a film on a big screen about The First Serbian Rebellion, as part of prepartions for the upcoming excursion. Second grade pupils were in the multimedia centre learning French through karaoke and in the big reading room the librarian was introducing to first grade pupils the varieties of possibilities that a library can offer. Not even the computers remained unused. The youngest pupils were occupied with games and drawing, and those older were searching for important information on the Internet and preparing for classes. Is there a better way to celebrate The International School Library Day!
