On 20 September an activity started in Viesite Secondary School the theme of which was “Put your trifles aside, give yourself up to reading delight.” It is a reading marathon called “Children Jury 2007”. The activity involves pupils from different age groups. Classes 3 and 4 were the first who responded to the challenge, but on 12 October classes 1 and 2 followed them. Now also classes 5-7 and 8-9 have joined the reading marathon. The school librarian has suggested to them a list of books. The children are asked to read them and find their favourite one. To become a book expert, a pupil signs an agreement that they will read all the nine books (every class has got a different list of books) and later will give their estimation of the books.

On 7-9 October an exhibition of bookmarks was displayed in Viesite Secondary School. The pupils from classes 5-9 had created self-made bookmarks telling about their favourite books and writers. Some days later the exhibition started its way to Portugal.

An educational programme was worked out to let the pupils from classes 5-6 get acquainted with the stock of reference literature available in the school library.

A campaign “Let’s save our text-books”, under supervision of the Students` Parliament and the school librarian, has started in our school. The purpose of the activity is to promote the pupils to take care of their text-books. As the books belong to the school library, they should be saved at least for four years. Now the pupils are asked to look through their books and `heal` them as good as they can. The children should remember that a book is their friend, adviser and support in their studies.

An exhibition of bookmarks made by the pupils of "Escola Básica 2, 3 de Carregosa"/Portugal was displayed in the library of Viesite Secondary School during the autumn holidays (22-28 October).

From Helen Boelens, Mediatecaris, Kalsbeek College, Woerden.
Here is the Powerpoint presentation we have made of pupils in our 1st class (year 7, I think 12-13 year old) taking part in a library instruction and also in a competition for International School Library Day. The pupils are designing a new cover for their favourite book. More than 350 pupils took part in the competition. There are two parent evenings next week, which will be attended by the parents of these children. The Powerpoint will run continuously during these evenings. Gerald Brown has sent a message in English, which also appears on the Powerpoint.
