From Andrea Walker, Head of Library & Information Resources, Renaissance College, New Territories.
Renaissance College is a Year 1-13 school in Hong Kong. We are an IB world school offering all three programs - PYP, MYP and Diploma. We are in our second year of operation and growing rapidly. We will be celebrating ISLD by holding a Book Fair and hosting an author visit by Jan Latta (wildlife photographer and author). We have taken the theme Learning: Powered by your school library and the ISLD logo to promote alternative energy sources such as wind power. We have decorated the library with paper windmills inspired by the ISLD logo and created signs that ask students to Breeze into the library and power up their learning.
There will be messages about the Book Fair on our school web site.

Hungary

From Ibolya Barta, Teacher.
I am a teacher from Hungary and I was the first who connected to ISLD in Hungary. Now I have a lot of friends who celebrate together with us. In Hungary for the first time Mr. Istvan Hiller, the Minister of Education and Culture, wrote us a very nice letter for this day. I have included the programs from Hungary - I have tried to collect this and translate, but we have a Hungarian website too. Here we can see everybody's creations (posters) for application for the Hungarian Library Teachers' Association.

India

From Madhu Bhargava, Dean of Libraries, G.D. Goenka World School, Sohna-Haryana.
We have started with ISLD celebrations today (15 October) enveloping the whole school. Monday started with a bang. That was with a book fair with Clifford Parade. Our Tiny Tots came to the inauguration and were very excited to meet the Clifford who loves to read. They were given caps with "Read to Lead" and ISLD badges. Beautiful huge posters have been created by the Art Department to support the celebrations and are placed at strategic points. The Book Fair was inaugurated by our Principal in this cheerful and colourful atmosphere. Our "Library Journal @ GDGWS" was released by her on this occasion. Our slogan writing competition was for VI-VII grades. Each slogan ends with "@ your library", which I adopted from AASL. We invited a professional storyteller for the Primary Years Program. What a gala time they had. It was a very, very interactive session by Ms. Monisha Gupta, who works for Times of India. We had widely distributed "Get caught Reading @" slips to the whole school, adding many places like the library, lawns, refectories, corridors. We photographed students reading today in many different locations which we will show in the assembly. Those in the pictures will be given surprise gifts. A link to our web site which will be funcational tomorrow will hold all the updates and photographs for all these days. Our main attraction for the remaining days:

  • A Cartoonist's work shop with Middle Years students
  • Create an electronic advertisement for your favourite book will be a house competition.
  • Special assembly where we will talk about the cycle "Reading-learning-knowledge-application of knowledge-leading to reading again" - in a very interesting manner. We will ask our students to apply their knowledge about movies on the spot and win gifts. We will show them movie clips and challenge them to identify the author, whose novels on which these movies were based. Before entering the assembly hall students will be handed over a slip for writing the answers. Students will be able to drop their answers in drop boxes kept in the refectories. Entries with ten correct entries will be given gifts on Wednesday.
  • At the Wednesday Assembly students will be invited to identify the first line of a popular novel and win prizes.
  • Design an electronic newsletter for your library is an activity for grades VIII-IX-X
  • Design a web page for your library is an activity for grades XI-XII. These creative activities will happen in the computer labs.
  • "Top Reader @ GDGWS" is our highest award. It will be determined through written quiz preliminaries which starts on Tuesday. There will be four levels of awards. Final event will take place on 22 October to climax ISLD.

All our ideas are to associate reading with learning and with having fun. We look forward to reading about your activities too.

Hello! A Very Happy ISLD! We have spread the celebrations of ISLD throughout this week. So I won't say belated ISLD wishes.

Students from class I-VII, Staff and City Librarians were involved in ISLD celebrations.

Our Principal, Mr. M L Pauly led the celebrations by welcoming around 12 city school librarians, who had come to our school to attend a group discussion on the ISLD theme "Learning: Powered by your School Library". Mrs. Rhoda Bharucha, Director of ADINET (Ahmedabad Librarians Network) a network of city librarians, was the chief guest and she addressed us and guided us through the discussion towards the formation of school librarians association at the city level.

We had put up the message we had received from the President of IASL, on the occasion of ISLD wishing us and could share a great deal about IASL, its activities, membership details.

Our teachers, are involved in a project called "I Share with you" wherein some of them have/are sharing their favourite books as children and their reading habits during the assembly with our school children throughout this week to motivate them to take up reading as a virtue and not just as a habit.

My colleague , Mrs. Mona Shah led the celebrations by decorating the Junior Library  and involving students of class I-IV, while I took charge of classes V-VII, in various activities which are listed below.

  • Class I students put up bright coloured hanging mobiles of different shapes describing their library in one word.
  • Class II students participated in a colouring competition of the ISLD theme Poster.
  • Class III students were involved in Creative Writing on the theme of My Library.
  • Class IV students participated in an Essay Competition on the topic "How do I use my Library".
  • Class V students are submitting feedback forms on their library by evaluating its strength & weakness and suggesting improvements.
  • Class VI students are doing Book Presentations during the assembly on the books they have read this year throughout the whole week.
  • Class VII students have put up posters on the theme of their School Library and its Collection & Usage and will participate in a Focus Group Discussion on the theme of ISLD on this Friday.

Our children were excited to receive the book marks from our partner school, St. Mary and All Angels School, California, USA. We displayed them in our Library. Thanks Aileen!

I feel it was a very rewarding and learning experience to coordinate the ISLD activities, for it bought me a step closer to achieving many of my professional goals!

Thanks IASL, Thanks Rick, Thanks James and Karen for being my inspiration!

From Naaz Kirmani, Resource Coordinator & IB Coordinator, Choithram International, Indore.
Hello Everyone. Wish You All A Very Happy ISLD 2007.

ISLD was celebrated in our school with great zeal and enthusiasm. Colourful posters and soft boards were displayed at various places in the school to encourage and urge students into participating in various ISLD activities. The message by the IASL President, Mr. James Henri, was also displayed on the library notice board. The day began with a special morning assembly presentation by Grade 11 (AS Level) students highlighting the importance of school library and the vital role it plays in fostering literacy in the school community. Our school Principal, Mr. H.G Pant addressed the students and encouraged them to become avid readers in life.

Our students also participated in a Book Mark Exchange Programme with Mennonite Brethen Collegiate Institute, Canada. The students enthusiastically made colourful bookmarks which were despatched to Canada in the last week of September. The Bookmarks received from Canada were displayed in Library Resource Centre. Thanks Rick for all the support.

Italy

The Italian Library Association, some Cultural Institutes in Rome, the European Library/Biblioteche di Roma, and the University "Roma Tre" are happy to celebrate ISLD 2007 and announce the following seminar.

International seminar - The Library: a Partner of the School in the Educational Process: Reflections, Practices and Perspectives - Goethe Institut Auditorium (Via Savia 15 - Rome), October 29th 2007.

About half a century of surveys, research and practice in the field demonstrate and underline that the school library plays a strategic role in providing access to information, reading, knowledge, and has a positive impact on students' learning and outcomes. In order to effectively promote reading and to educate pupils to use information in a competent way, there is a need for good school libraries, with stable funding, which are professionally set up. These school libraries must have a qualified and well trained staff who can teach interdisciplinary information skills and co-ordinate the use of information throughout the entire school.

The Library: a Partner of the School in Educational Process. Reflections, practices and perspectives, organized within the International School Library Day initiatives, aims at presenting and discussing an update of the European vision of school librarianship, and to reflect on some good practices - at an educational and organizational level - for school libraries in Europe, as also discussed within ENSIL. Professional development for school librarians and for those who are interested in the learning process will also be discussed. This seminar hopes to give participants a greater awareness of the crucial role of the school library in the lifelong learning perspective.

Language: English, German and Italian. The simultaneous translation will be provided.

Organization: AIB (Lazio and CNBS - School Libraries National Committee); Cultural Institutes in Rome (The British Council, Goethe Institut, Det norske institutt i Roma, and the University of Zagreb; European Library/Biblioteche di Roma; Universita "Roma Tre", Facolta di Scienze della Formazione, Filiera Educativo-Pedagogica.
