President's message - James Henri
Dear IASL Colleagues
I know that some of you may already have held your ISLD celebrations and I hope that your event was a wonderful success. I encourage all other members to get involved and to spread the word about ISLD. This is a wonderful opportunity to highlight our profession to our communities.
Let us all grab the opportunity to promote the value of school libraries to the world. We are blessed to have a quantity of research that demonstrates that a well resourced library in partnership with a full time professionally qualified school librarian is probably the single most resource efficient way to boost student learning that ultimately empowers students to become efficient independent learners.
Our IASL provides an umbrella that enables very strong networking among school librarians across the world and I encourage you to take this opportunity to encourage your colleagues to join our organisation.
Best wishes for ISLD.
Wishing everyone a Happy International School Library Day (ISLD) !
ISLD was first celebrated in 1999, under then-President of IASL Blanche Woolls. It has been 8 years since we have been celebrating ISLD, and it has had an impact, as you can some of the past reports at the IASL web site and the reports that are trickling in for this year.
Each year, there has been a different theme to highlight the many ways we can view the role of the school library. This year's theme is "Learning: Powered by Your School Library", and as ISLD Coordinator Rick Mulholland points out, it is an opportunity to show that the school library plays an important part in learning.
We have made much progress in bringing attention to school libraries in the educational process. However, we still have a long way to go before the school library is truly recognized as being integral in education. But every small step that you take in bringing about awareness and demonstrating the importance of the school library is important. So make of the opportunity provided by ISLD, and share the passion that you have for school libraries with whoever you can today.
Once again, wishing everyone a very Happy ISLD!

We have celebrated ISLD in a very low key way this year at our school because our library is shortly to move and we have started packing up. We put up ISLD posters and Primary students have had the colouring template from the ISLD webpage to colour in. Also one of our library staff made 150 coloured and laminated bookmarks with the school logo and International School Library Day, October 2007 on one side and a variety of quotes about libraries on the other. The one that seems to be the most popular is: "What can I say? Librarians rule..." I hope everyone has really been enjoying their celebration of ISLD.
From Mary Manning, Executive Officer, School Library Association of Victoria, Victoria.
We were delighted that here in Victoria, Australia, our members were invited by the State Library of Victoria to celebrate school libraries and explore the future with them. Using the theme, 'inquiring minds + flexible thinking = school libraries', SLAV members joined eminent panellists as they explored the purpose and future of school libraries. The wonderful online initiatives and exhibitions of rare and historic material of the State Library were also explored by members. Download the details of this conference.
SLAV's new publication, Rethink! Ideas for inspiring school library design, edited by Susan La Marca, with a featured section by Kevin Hennah, was launched by the State Librarian, Anne-Marie Swirtlich. Download further details regarding this exciting publication.
The annual SLAV International School Libraries Day Awards Dinner was held in the evening with MC and comedian, Josh Earl entertaining the distinguished guests and school library staff who were in attendance. Josh gained popularity at the Melbourne Comedy Festival with his show, 'Josh Earl is a librarian'. The dinner is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the excellent and innovative work of the profession. The following awards were presented:
Congratulations to these worthy recipients. Details regarding the criteria for these awards can be found on our website.
The winners of the Webquest of the Year Award were also announced at this dinner. This annual award is a joint project of the School Library Association of Victoria and the Victorian Education Channel, Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. Our third annual ISLD celebration will be held at the Lillian H. Smith Library, 239 College St, Toronto from 4.00 to 5.45. Our program includes:
From Kathleen Minardi, Library Technician, John Paul II School, Calgary, Alberta.
We offered students a change to color the coloring page from your suggested items and throughout the week, and to the end of October, the colored pictures are on a bulletin board outside the library. Next year we would be interested in obtaining bookmarks for the students.
From Sandy Constantine, Teacher Librarian, Thames Valley District School Board.
We had the entire school dress up in pajamas and cozies for the day. Then all classes were paired up and read together for the last period of the day. We packed as many classes into the library as possible. A love of reading was modelled and literacy was enjoyed by all.

A writer in the school library is going to present the novel about school life based on real stories and especially events in the school bus. That bus is known as Line 32 and the young writer, Tatjana Udovic, gave the same title to her novel.

I am expressing my gratitude for being invited to join the celebration of The International School Library Day and from all my heart I am forwaring my greetings to all my friends worldwide. The theme: Learning: Empowered by a school library - The Alphabet in school library (our working theme) is going to be presented to all students in an exhibition, and particularly to the 4th grade students, the age of 10, at 8.00 am. There are going to be organized creative workshops about using the alphabet (key words) in the field of librarianship, which are crucial for the research working in libraries. To choose the right information means to invest in personal upgrading and create a habit of lifelong learning, and developing of a culture in a broader sense.
