IASL: Annual Conferences: 2003: HIV/AIDS and School Libraries

International Association of School Librarianship (IASL)

2003 Annual Conference, Durban, South Africa, 7-11 July 2003

A I D S AND HIV and school libraries

At the 2002 IASL Conference in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, Margaret Baffour-Awuah of Botswana gave a presentation on "The Fight Against HIV/AIDS: Are School Libraries at the Battle Front?". This paper is available in the printed proceedings of the 2002 conference. Because of the concerns that Margaret raised, it was suggested that we encourage special sessions on HIV/AIDS and school libraries at the 2003 conference.

It was also suggested that delegates be asked to bring a book from their country that deals in some way with HIV/AIDS -- whether a fiction book or an information book. The books would be the focus of a special display at the conference, and a bibliography would be compiled and shared. The display would let us see how HIV/AIDS is treated in books for young people in different parts of the world.

See our lists of Fiction Books for Young People and Picture Books for Young Children that deal in some way with HIV/AIDS. Suggestions for additions to these lists are welcome!
