The IASL 2008 Conference

Understanding School Library Education in the International Context: Developing Further Education Programs to Support World Class Learning and Literacy Workshop Proposal

Monday, August 4, 2008 -- Sessions A and B, commencing 10.30 am.

The mission of the School Library Education Special Interest Group of IASL is:

  • to discuss emerging trends in education for school librarianship;
  • to identify and interpret emerging themes and approaches in instructional methods, curriculum, technologies;
  • to disseminate information on major new national, regional, state, provincial and local documents;
  • to examine trends and issues related to the provision of distance education for school librarianship;
  • and, to examine trends and issues related to the provision of continuing professional development for school librarianship.

One way to meet our mission is to provide an open forum for discussing all aspects of education for school librarianship. This panel session will provide participants with an opportunity to hear about and discuss the latest developments, trends, and issues in the area of school library education. Panel participants who are leaders in school library education from around the world have been asked to share ideas, possibilities and opportunities as well as current challenges and roadblocks to preparing school librarians/teacher-librarians. This panel presentation and discussion is sponsored by the IASL School Library Education Special Interest Group.

Dr. Jennifer Branch, Chair of the School Library Education Special Interest Group, will chair the panel. Topics for discussion will include, but are not limited to:

  • the different concepts of education for school librarianship internationally as well as some historical background on school library education.
  • the changes (in attitudes to the training of school librarians) which have taken place since the introduction of ICT within the schools.
  • funding for school libraries and for staffing of school libraries
  • requirements and standards for school library education and for school librarians/teacher-librarians.
  • curriculum (the core competencies of school librarians/teacher-librarians.
  • distance education.
  • creating a comprehensive list of facilities that provide further education for school librarians/teacher-librarians
