Five school library tours are offered during the conference. Each group has three options.

Options Introduction
1. National Taiwan University Library

The library collection presently includes more than 2,400,00 volumes (including books, bound periodicals, bound newspapers and various sorts of audiovisual materials); 24,000 periodicals; and 98 newspapers. It is the largest library collection in Taiwan.
The library holds over 50,000 rare books in Chinese and other languages, the largest such holding on any university library in Taiwan. The Tan-Hsin Tan An (judiciary archive of Tamsu and Hsin-chu area), Ming editions of stiched binding books, the Rekidai Hoan (diplomatic archive of Ryukyu Kingdom), and the collection of European incunabla are particularly valuable. In addition, the collection includes a wealth of material on Taiwan history, Southeast Asia, and Japanese materials from the period of Japanese rule in Taiwan.
The library as been designated one of the official repositories of government publications and maintains agreements to exchange publications with over 2,000 academic and research institutions in over sixty countries, in this way fostering inter-university and international exchange.

2. KANG CHIAO Bilingual School Library
  1. Opening Hours: The library is open Monday through Friday from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm each school day.
  2. Spaces: about 1,060 square meters
  3. Personnel: The library personnel includes 3 full-time professionally certified librarians, student and parent volunteers.
  4. Resources:
    In print materials: 32, 929 Chinese books, 30,533 English books, 32 Chinese Journals, 24 English Journals and 5 newspapers;
    Multimedia materials: 4,707 items (CDs, VCDs, DVDs, CD-ROMs & Kits);
    Electronic resources: Library Online Catalog & K-12 Information Databases;
    Equipment: 10 PCs, 1 DVD Player, 1 VCR, 1 Overhead Projector & 1 Data Projector.

  6. Library Services:
    Individual students may come to the library during breaks for book selection, browsing, recreational reading, checking out and in books. Each student may check our 4 books (2 Chinese books & 2 English books) at a time for 14 days.
    Class Visits: Each class will be scheduled weekly for 2-4 periods in the library.
    The time will be used for stories, book talks, checking out materials, quiet reading, study, research, using computer labs, or using audio-visual room.
    Core Collection Development: K-12 teaching & learning materials, KCBS Reading Program resources (classroom sets, big books, teacher suggested reading titles, award-winning titles, guided reading materials, etc.)

3. Taipei Public Library

During the past 50-odd years Taipei Public Library has been expanded from the afore-mentioned four early libraries to the current main library, 40 branch libraries, 14 neighborhood reading rooms and 2 more branch libraries in preparation.
The library collection includes books, periodicals, newspapers, pamphlets and multi-media materials in a wide range of fields. The library collection presently includes more than 4,577,400 volumes (including books, bound periodicals, and bound newspapers); 6,710 periodicals; 1,124 newspapers; and 161,292 multi-media materials.
In the light of the conceptions of the classified collections and the reinforced subject service, TPL and its 30-odd branch libraries have special collections but more at Longshan Branch Library and all neighborhood reading rooms because of the limited space and funds. All these special collections are developed with characteristic features for providing the related information and extending the relevant service. In addition, shouldering the responsibility of the regional cultural preservation and knowledge initiation, libraries in the 21st information society and the networked global village have to be more co-existent and mutually dependable and closer in relationship for cooperation and competition.

2. Group B: 18th July - Morning 10:00 - 11:30

Options Introduction
1. Taipei Country Ching-Shui High School Library

Currently the school has 91 junior-high classes and 27 senior-high classes. There are around 5000 faculty members and students. The library was established in 1998. It is a six-storey building with different learning features on each storey to satisfy the learning requirement of each social group.
The morning reading for every Friday, wisdom reading, e-paper, and training seeds for studying groups in classes were carried out in 2003. It cooperated with Quanta Culture & Education Foundation to hold exhibitions. In 2006, the library endeavours to become the "center of studying area and culture" and tries to break through the traditional mode of management in general high school libraries. It organizes an "Alliance of Wisdom Tree" with the primary schools in the same school district and shares the library with the faculty and students of these schools. Further, "Reading Day", yearly thematic learning and training elite for all activities are held together and we try to make the spirit of Grade 1 - 9 curriculum to be put into practice.

2. Taipei Long-An Elementary School Library

The Taipei Long-An Elementary School Library aims to enhance the children's reading ability and information literacy. Our collection includes books, children's illustration books, serials, journals, audio-visual materials, reference books, pamphlets and so on. We have the most warm-hearted volunteers regularly holding children activities such as Book of the Month, Doctor's Mailbox, Subject Books Exhibition. In order to acquaint the children with the library resources we give many lessons on the historic evolution of books, Punctuation Practices, the Chinese Classification System, the use of reference books and hold interesting activities such as the Tour of the Librray, Class Story-telling, Christmas Story-telling, Meeting the Author, and so on. The Virtual Library provides not only online OPAC but also other resources such as hot news, Book of the Month, Doctor's Mailbox, Volunteer Traiing Class and Q & A. 3. Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School Library

The library serves as the strong back-up in seeking knowledge as well as the recource center of learning to all the faculty and students. In the aspect of hardward facilities, besides the two-storey main building that serves the main function of the library, it also include a distant-learning classroom and a teaching-material making studio, which will push the library to meet the goals of assisting teaching positively. In the library collections the library offers a wealth of books and periodicals as well as the audiovisual materials purchased regularly each year to cater for the needs of diversified learning. The audiovisual facilities are also provided for students to use. Furthermore, in order to create the atmosphere of reading, the library holds the following activities irregularly:

  1. The guide to the usage of library resources: The guide is held every September for all the freshman, aiming at introducing the library facilities and policies that will become indespensable to students' learning process.
  2. The book exhibitions of every adademic subject: The book exhititions are held twice a year. During the exhibitions all the teachers can take chances to recommend good books related to the subjects they teach to the students for further study. After the exhibitions, the library will purchase all the books recommended by the teachers as library collections.
  3. The express of new books to Red Building: After the book exhibitions the library will introduce to all the students and faculty the newly purchased books by exhibiting them at the entrance hall of Red Building where people pass frequently. Besides, via the use of wireless internet, all the students and faculty can complete the loan process of the new books on the spot. By doing so the circulation of new library collections will be improved greatly.
  4. The section for assigned books: The library will collect all the books that are assigned by teachers and display them in specific sections for students to do the assighments and shorten the loan periods to speek up the books' circulation pace.
  5. The recruiting of 'pre-librarians': The library will recruit the students who are interested in library work as 'pre-librarians' and divide them into sections according to their will, such as Catalogue Section, Promotion Section, Embellish Section, and Information Section. Such activity can not only offer the library a big favour in dealing with librarianship, but attract students to sue the library frequently.
  6. The promotion of library collections through the webpage: The 'Active Website', built up by the newest web page design technology, consists of two topics - 'Knowledge Supplement Station' and 'New Library Collections'. 'Knowledge Supplement Station' aims at introducing a specific topic every month and recommending related library collections to all the readers for further reading. 'New Library Collections', on the other hand, shows the images of the new book covers and offers the link to the internet bookstore (http://www.books.com) for readers to browse the book reviews.

3. Group C: 18th July - Afternoon 14:30 - 16:00

Options Introduction

1. National Taiwan Library

This library's task is to collect, organize, verify, display, research, and disseminate books and information, as well as to assist the development of public libraries throughout Taiwan. Our Reference Room offers consulting services by reference librarians. We hold reference materials and government documents in the Reference Room, and accept oral, written, phone, or e-mail queries from organizations as well as individuals. To facilate research and reference we have compiled various special-topic catalogues. In conjunction with the automation of the library our Reference Room has established an "Online Information Research Area" providing access to the Internet and CD-ROM databases. We have also developed an index system for papers on periodicals related to Taiwan subject in our collection, and a Taiwan information newspaper clipping CD-ROM system. These, along with the online access, advance users to look up and make the best use of information online.

2. Taipei Public Library Zhong Lun Branch

Zhong-Lun branch of Taipei Public Library is the first library of comic collection in Taiwan.
The library collection presently includes more than 60,000 volumes in 13 categories, including Children-based, Adult-based, Children, Mysterious, Scientific, Sports, Social reality, Literary, Detective Comic Books, Books during the period of censorship by the National Institute for Compilation and Translation and Works by Chinese comic artists. Other collections include reference books, periodicals, multi-media materials and editing materials. The most special is the collection of comic artists' manuscripts and famous works.

3. Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch

The new Beitou Branch Library is a two-storey building with one basement level. Reconstruction began in June 2005. The main theme for the Beitou Branch Library building's design is "ecology and preservation". Besides this, the facility is also the only library in Taiwan that is considered "green". Along with the physical appearance of ecology the building also houses a large collection of books on the theme of the building.

4. Group D: 19th July - Morning 10:00 - 11:30

Options Introduction
1. National San-Chung Senior High School Library
  1. National San-Chung Senior High School was established in 1994. The Teaching Resource Center is located on the second and third floors in the library building and the total space is about 2314 square meters.
  2. There are twenty areas in the library and each one has different functions, combining tradition and creative.
  3. The library collection presently includes more than 100,000 volumes (including Chinese and foreign language books), 700 multi-media materials (including tapes, video tapes, CD, VCD, and DVD), 27 periodicals and other books donated by companies (about 100 volumes, 10 Chinese newspapers, and 2 English newspapers).
  4. There are also many exhibitions donated by many teachers and collected by the librarian. There are two exhibiting areas, Literary and Art Gallery, and The Corner of Library, having exhibitions with different topics every month.
2. Taipei Beitou Elementary School Library

Taipei Beitou Elementary School was rebuilt in 2007, and the library became a learning resource center for teachers and students.
The features of the library:

  1. Reading plan includes: (1)library visiting; (2) class co-reading; (3) film appreciation; (4) dating with writers; (5) revise of literary works and film appreciation; (6) musical play appreciation
  2. Volunteers work for the library: (1) to take some training courses and tell stories in classes of the first and second grade; (2) to cooperate with Batou-Liren Association to assist in the guidance of Beitou history and some activities; (3) to train book-reading angels who will introduce the new books to other students; (4) to hold some trivia games about books.
  3. Library education includes: (1) regular library classes; (2) library visiting with professional guiders; (3) information searching competition; (4) information editing and collection; (5) topic book exhibition; (6) students' story-telling activities; (7) trivia games of Dr. E's mailbox; (8) book searching service; (9) worksheet and small-book design; (10) reading and composition activities; (11) library weekly celebration; (12) reflection of E-BOOK online reading; (13) archives searching and application.
3. Taipei Jan Cheung Junior High School

Taipei Jan Cheun Junior High School is located at the former site of Taipei City Government. It was relocated in 2000 and the campus is linked to the Museum of Contempory Art. With the combinatoin of the historic building and modern technology, the " New Jan Cheung" provides students comfortable facilities and new technology, and it has become a new landmark and the cultural center of the community. We make sure the school will constantly insist on learning and growing no matter the time and space changes. We also have the good chance to make the school become a learning community with high class. We have the responsibility and honor to make students learn to live, study, germinate human soul, art feeling, technical accomplishments, and have the international competitive competence of a free educational space.
The features of the library:

  1. Well-designed space: the warm, comfortable, bright space with distinguishing areas, Comic Books Area is the most popular.
  2. Different courses for extending reading: teach students to make good use of the library.
  3. More activities: good books recommendation, composition competition of reading reflection, exhibitions.
  4. Parent volunteers participation: to combine teachers with social resources, to form parents and community reading clubs, and promote extensive reading.

5. Group E: 19th July - Afternoon 14:30 - 16:00

Options Introduction
1. National Central Library

The National Central Library (NCL) is the sole national library of Taiwan. The library's mission is to acquire, catalog, and preserve national publications and to make these resources available to government agencies, private organizations, researchers, and the general public to advance national learning and cultural preservation.
The library also assists academic research, sponsors educational activities, promotes the professional development of librarianship, and carries out international exchange activities aimed at strengthening cooperation between domestic and foreign libraries. In addition, the library supports the Center for Chinese Studies (CCS), which is devoted to the enrichment of resources for Sinological research.
The library was founded in 1933. Over the years, the NCL has been forced to relocate several times due to the political instability. Today, the library not only offers the traditional paper collections but also digital service.

Taipei Public Library WenShan Branch

TPL WenShan Branch is located within the beautiful and picturesque WenShan district. It is also close to Shrding Shiang (which is famous for Prouchong Tea and the northern Pouchong Tea Testing and Extension Center WenShan Branch is also located here), Pingin Shiang (Tea Museum) and Mucha Maokong (which is well-known for TeiGuanYin Tea). These are regional characteristics for the library to develop, thus, tea art is the main feature of the library.

3. Taipei Public Library Li Xing Branch
  1. Taiwanese literature and literature resources.
  2. Taiwanese literary criticism.
  3. Taiwanese local literature and its comparison.
  4. Other kinds of literature, such as poetry, rhetoric, prose, novel, folk literature, and children literature (children poerty and songs).
  5. Taiwanese writers' autobiographies.
