IASL International Awards Programme

IASL SCHOOL LIBRARIANSHIP AWARD

Introduction

Recipients of this award are recognised by the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) for their contribution to the national development of school libraries and services within their own country or internationally. There is no monetary recompense for this award. There may be more than 1 recipient. Recipients must be individual members of IASL.

This award is announced at the beginning of International School Library Month (October) annually. The award is the premier recognition of services to school libraries internationally.

Guidelines for Nomination

Criteria that must be addressed in the application form are:

  • The nominator for this award must be a member of IASL;
  • The nominee must be a member of IASL;
  • Evidence of high quality recognition should be addressed in at least 3 of the following areas:
    • Organisation of professional development for school libraries nationally or internationally,
    • Articles published in journals on school libraries,
    • Presentations at regional, national or international conferences or professional development activities,
    • Documented research on school libraries,
    • Establishment of a teacher librarian network or school library association.
  • Referee statements attesting to the nomination.

Nominations close for the IASL School Librarianship Award on 1 July each year. The award is announced on 1 October – the beginning of International School Library Month.

Competed application forms and related documentation to be send to the IASL Secretariat , preferably by email attachment, on or before 1 July.

Timeline

1 July - Nominations received -- please send by email attachment.
1 August - Applications distributed to selection panel.
1 September - Notification from Awards Chair to Executive Secretary of recommendation.
1 October - Announcement to media and through IASL website and all certificates received by nominator / recipient for promotion within recipient country.

Procedures

1. Application form available from IASL website.

2. Nominator (member) completes application form including contact details for nominee and the nominees signature as acceptance of the nomination.

3. Up to 3 referee statements are included with the nomination form.

4. Selection panel consists of Awards Chair, Executive Secretary and the President or the President's nominee.

5. The selection panel may need to contact the nominee for clarification or further explanation.

6. Notification to IASL Executive Secretary of recipient.

7. Responsibilities of the nominee:
a. Arrange any translations required of both the application and media releases.
b. Identify the appropriate press or media outlets in the recipient's country and send the contact details to the IASL Executive Secretary.
c. Organises an Awards Presentation in the recipient's country, if required.

8. Responsibilities of IASL:
a. The Selection Panel has the final decision on recipients in each year.
b. IASL organises a certificate to be delivered to the nominator (or recipient) together with a citation.
c. IASL sends a letter to the recipients’ employer notifying the organisation of the prestigious award and thanking the employer for their encouragement of the profession.
d. IASL organises a media release and sends this to the nominator.
e. IASL posts the announcement and citation with a photo of the recipient to the IASL website.

  • IASL School Librarianship Award 2009 -- Maria Jose Vitorino (Portugal)
  • IASL School Librarianship Award 2008 -- Professor Bernadete Campello (Brazil), Dr. Dana Dukic (Hong Kong), Luisa Marquardt (Italy), Jane Viner (Australia)
