Infoplease.Com is a daily almanac site with "facts behind the news", "today in history", a "kids almanac", feature stories behind the day's news, and a search engine.
In the 500 days leading up to 31 December 1999, Britain's newspaper The Guardian carried a column each day that covered two years of the period 1000-1999. You can search by a year to find out what happened that year -- in the United Kingdom and throughout the world. There are links to other information in The Guardian and elsewhere. Well written and with some great illustrations.
