AcademicInfo: Subject Guides & Online Degrees
AcademicInfo is an online education resource center with extensive subject guides and distance learning information. Their mission is to provide free, independent and accurate information and resources for prospective and current students (and other researchers). AcademicInfo was founded in 1998 by Mike Madin, a librarian coordinator, and is now maintained by multiple contributors. The site currently features over 25,000+ hand-picked resources and update the website on a daily basis.
The Summit on School Libraries 2002
The Summit on School Libraries was called to help find a response to what is perceived as "a growing crisis in school libraries. Is this the crisis? Or is the crisis about how children and young people are learning to prepare for the knowledge creation that will be demanded of them in the workplace? Or, is the crisis to do with teachers and their understanding of information sources and knowledge management in the context of new curriculum? Or is the current strain just a natural part of the evolution of values in education and society?" Speakers included Ross Todd (School Libraries: Rearranging the Jig Saw Pieces or Creating the Picture? A Holistic Model of information Provision for Schools), Keith Curry Lance and David Loertscher (School Libraries: What the Research Shows), Rose Dotten (The Reach for National Standards), and Roch Carrier (Preferred Futures for Library and Information Services in Schools). The papers are available in full text.
The Internet Public Library, maintained by the library school at the University of Michigan is a wonderful resource for all kinds of libraries. The site is built as a "virtual library", with a reference room, youth division, exhibition area, and resources and services for librarians. There is a question-and-answer service, bibliographies, online reference works, and links to other information sources.
From the Information Institute of Syracuse, the people who created AskERIC, the Gateway to Educational Materials, and the Virtual Reference Desk, the Educator's Reference Desk delivers a host of resources.
School Library Journal, the well-known print journal, is now available in an online version as well. On this Web site, you will find some of the familiar features of the printed journal, plus some additional features exclusive to the Web version. There are news items, the full text of some articles, a calendar of events, lists of resources for school librarians, and a "SLJOnline Web Site of the Month".
SLiP: School Library Information Portal
SLiP provides "Canadian connections to school library documents". Topics covered include advocacy, standards and policies for school libraries in Canada, school library programs, professional development, research, and school library management issues. Sponsored by the National Library of Canada, the Canadian Library Association, the Canadian School Library Association, and the Association for Teacher Librarianship in Canada, the site was still under development in November 2002.
Resource Links is a Canadian "national journal devoted to the review and evaluation of Canadian resources for children and young adults". This site has reviews from current issues of the periodical, a comprehensive listing of Canadaian award winning books, feature articles, and an index of all the reviews which should be of interest and use to teacher-librarians.
Strongest Links -- The Website for UK School Librarians
Created and maintained by Anne Robinson, this site "is an attempt to bring together sources of support for our work, including organisations, research on the impact of school libraries, information literacy and web design issues." There are pages of links to organisations and mailing lists, government bodies, research and reports, E-Journals and magazines. Special sections of the site have links to resources for information literacy and websites and web design. One page is devoted to book and author links, with an emphasis on UK links. Links are annotated throughout the site.
A place on EdNA (the Education Network of Australia) where teacher librarians can share documents and news with other teacher librarians. The documents include surveys and questionnaires, quizzes, sample programmes, among other things. There are also links to professional development opportunities and professional listservs.
This Web site was created "for all who are interested in providing the best resources and services possible for school libraries and for librarians and others who are engaged in creating and maintaining online or virtual environments for their libraries". The site is maintained by Peter Milbury and is associed with his "School Librarian Web Pages" site.
Created by Baltimore County Public Schools, Office of Library Information Services (Maryland, USA), this Web site provides insights from research about the value and importance of school libraries, links to and summaries of current documents, links to news items about school libraries, advice for advocacy for school librarians, the full text of articles, advice on applying for funding for projects, and programs for school library media specialists.
"Web resources helpful for librarians doing research". This is a collection to links for research on the Internet. There is a collection of links to searchable databases (including ERIC and FindArticles), links to electronic journals and to collections of electronic journals, and sites that make statistical and other data available for downloading.
Linda C Joseph, a Library Media Specialist in Columbus, Ohio (USA) produces "CyberBee", a combination of electronic magazine for school librarians and teachers and collection of resources. The focus is on the use of the Internet in schools, with links to curriculum-related Web sites. Interesting interactive projects are promoted, and there is aguide for creating a school Web page.
The "Middle School Cybrary" provides "globas access to educational resources" for use in the school library or for "homework help" outside the school setting. The main page always has links to resources related to current events or celebrations, and there are links to resources related to world history, American history, geography, world news, literature and writing, reference sources, art and music, mathematics, science, search resources, and teacher resources.
This has been created by Groton Public Schools in Connecticut "with twp goals in mind: to locate curriculum content on the Internet, and to use the Internet as a research and reference library". There are links to library and school-level resources on the net, search tools, subject guides, general reference resources, online books, online newspapers and periodicals, news services, and resources related to school subjects.
"The Electronic Library Classroom 101"
The BCK2SKOL ("Back to School") Web site has many useful resources for teachers and school librarians, including an online course, "The Electronic Library Classroom 101" for "librarians with little or no Net experience". The course is free.
Resources for librarians, including reference works, a collection of electronic books and electronic journals, newspapers online, book reviews, frequently asked questions, "back to school" resources, resources for particular groups of library users, professional information for librarians.
LibraryLand is an "index to resources for librarians", with a searchable index. It lists general library resources on the Net, as well as some resources designed specifically for school librarians or librarians working with young people.
The Librarian's Resource Centre -- The Toolbox
This is "a selective collection of resources compiled to facilitate our informational research and retrieval". It includes resources related to searching the Internet, current awareness sites, directories, ready reference resources, subject guides to information on the Internet, links to library catalogues, professional development resources. It is maintained by the SLA Toronto Chapter (Canada).
Another resource for Web page evaluation "Evaluating Web Sites, a set of criteria developed by instructional media specialist Philip Stohrer in the United States. On this site, there are also hints for Web searching, and a guide to "Citing Your Findings".
School Libraries and Information Literacy
This enormous Web site from the New South Wales (Australia) Department of Education and Training has information for teachers and school administrators as well as teacher librarians, though the site has material specifically designed to meet the needs of teacher librarians, too. There is news, information about district networds, discussion groups, professional development opportunities, information about resources (policy documents, publications, articles, school magazines, links to Internet resources), information about SCIS (the Schools Catalogue Information Service), and information about and abstracts of articles in Scan, the print magazine for schools and school libraries.
School Libraries -- Making a Difference
Visually appealing (with a striking illustration by children's book creator Lauren Child on the home page), this British site "supports Schools Library Services and school librarians in England and helps them assert the importance of their role and the significance of the school library." However, the site has usefulness well beyond England. The advocacy resources and ideas could be adapted to any setting.
This site takes you through the process of creating Web pages for your library. Page outlines are provided but you provide the text and other information. At the end of your session, you should have a Web page that you can move to a local Web server.
This is the home page of LM_NET, the international listserv for "School Library Media People". There is subscription information, a link to the LM_NET archives, an FAQ document, and other documents, including a document on "netiquette".
This is the Web site of "the Australian teacher librarians' professional electronic network". OZTL_NET is a listserv for teacher librarians, operating out of Charles Sturt University in Australia, and managed by Lyn Hay and Ken Dillon. The Web page has links to the OZTL_NET listserv archives, subscription information, and other information.
This is an educational technology journal and web site, produced by Jamieson McKenzie. It has the full text of articles, Jamie McKenzie's speeches, and links to a range of resources for school librarians.
"Published 5 times a year, Resource Links is Canada's newest national journal devoted to the review and evaluation of Canadian resources for children and young adults. Resource Links reviews new information books, picture books and novels or children and young adults, audio-visual materials, CD-ROMs, computer software, and Internet resources for young people and professional literature of interest to teachers and librarians."
BUBL -- Bulletin Board for Libraries
BUBL has a World Wide Web service and a gopher server. The aim of BUBL is to provide librarians with access to online information in the field of library and information science. It gives subject access to Internet resources, access to Internet resources by type (for example, gophers, USENET newsgroups, library catalogues), and access to a wide range of library science resources, including electronic journals, indexes, current publications, reference works.
International Thoughts and Tendencies - The World of Teaching
The Municipal Association of School Libraries in Denmark works on a political and professional level to promote better school libraries in Denmark. To develop this work, we have decided to publish a series about international thoughts and tendencies from all over the world. The World of Teaching is the first issue in this series, and we hope that it will inspire colleagues all over the world in their work.
