General Guidelines

  1. Two issues per year, January and July.
  2. Each Associate Editor responsible for review and revisions of articles for one issue.
  3. Each Associate Editor also responsible for final proofing and corrections of the paper plates of the issue worked on by the other Associate Editor.
  4. One Associate Editor responsible for sending out Calls for Papers; the other, for assisting the Editor with managing the local production process and with communication with the Editorial Board and IASL Board of Directors.
  5. Secretariat produces mailing labels for members, subscriptions, and complimentary copies.

Editing and Production Process

  1. Themes and submission deadlines for issue are set by the Editor and Associate Editors.
  2. Calls for Papers are sent out -- SLW, IASL Web page and Newsletter, IASL-LINK and other listservs.
  3. Articles are submitted to the Editor.
  4. The Editor scans incoming articles, assigns at least two reviewers for each article, and forwards the articles to the Associate Editor working on that issue.
  5. The Associate Editor sends out articles to reviewers and communicates with authors for revisions.
  6. The Associate Editor recommends the disposition of articles after receiving reviewers' comments.
  7. The Editor and Associate Editors decide on contents for each issue.
  8. Associate Editors notify authors and send articles (disk and hard copy) for typesetting (currently, Bayard Typesetting -- Naomi Stinson).
  9. The Editor requests mailing labels and forwards them to the mailing service (currently, RN Mailing Service).
  10. The typesetter sends paper plates for proofing and corrections to the Associate Editor, and e-mails the Table of Contents and abstracts to the IASL Webmaster.
  11. The typesetter makes corrections and takes final paper plates to printer (currently, Quality Color).
  12. The printer prints and binds the issue and forwards the copies to the mailing service.
  13. The mailing service sends extras to the Editor who sends out author copies and forwards other extras to the IASL Secretariat.

Production Process

  1. Calls for papers are sent out to other journals, to listservs, to the IASL Web Site, and to individual potential contributors.
  2. Submitted papers are reviewed by a minimum of two members of the Editorial Board.
  3. The Editors make revisions to the accepted papers. Papers requiring major revisions are returned to the author with suggestions for revisions.
  4. The final text for each issue of SLW is given, in electronic and paper form, to Bayard.
  5. Typesetting and Editing, for the production editing and layout, Bayard creates the paper plates and delivers them to Quality Color Press.
  6. The labels supplied by the Secretariat are sent by the Editor to RN Mailing.
  7. The printed and bound copies are then sent by the printer to RN Mailing Services for bagging in plastic and labeling and then to Materials Management, University of Alberta, for posting.
  8. Copies for indexing and/or reviewing are mailed, as part of Step 7, to the ERIC Clearinghouse on Information and Technology (USA); Contents Pages in Education; Children's Literature Abstracts (IFLA Children's Library Section); Library Literature (Wilson, USA); Library and Information Science Abstracts (Bowker­Saur, UK); and Bibliothek Forschung und Praxis (Germany).
  9. The extra copies are sent by Quality Color Press to the Editor who sends out copies to the authors.
  10. Other extra issues are sent to the IASL Secretariat for filling new subscription orders and back issue requests.
